Saturday, September 6th

Well, I went out to run 20 and finished with 14. The good news is that my knee isn't as sore today as it was yesterday, and my legs feel pretty good considering. I took an ice bath and that seems to really help.

My Garmin showed I was running 9:37 minute miles. I'm hoping to get completely recovered this week and do at least 20 (I really want to do more) miles before I go into rest mode for Portland. I guess I'm really worried I'll bonk on Mile 20-24 and have a hard time finishing my goal! My body is grumpy, I'm over taxed with work and family, and I just want this one thing in my life to go well!

Ok. . . .I'm done whining, and ready to just suck it up and go for it!

Here I go!

Hey Melissa,
Glad to hear your knees are beginning to feel better! Just think what your body will be able to accomplish when it is fully rested! This week, if your knees allow, concentrate on a Tuesday 5-6mile at an 80%ish pace and Thursday easy and we'll take Saturday one step at a time. Dave and I will be racing at Julia Davis park at 8am on Saturday (where the bandshell water station is) so we should be able to join up with you guys after the race and finish out your long run with you! Way to keep up with your running log! Have a wonderful restful Sunday! Monica

Hey Melissa,
It sounds like you're doing a lot of things right. Just make sure that you're stretching well, getting plenty of rest and taking ibuprofen (600 to 800mg) if you need it.
Keep in mind that a huge part of the 'bonking' that happens in a marathon is as much mental as it is physical, so prepare yourself for that.
Try experimenting with some sports drinks during your long runs as opposed to the gels, possibly some diluted Gatorade, and find out which types of things are going to agree with your digestive system. (The toast thing seems to be working out.)
You'll be fine for the marathon, just have confidence in your training and all of the work that you've done. Remember, don't swaet the small stuff (and it's all small stuff)!
